What Is Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)?

Conversion Rate Optimization: Conversion rate optimization is the practice of testing and adjusting a website's layout, copy, and calls to action to increase the percentage of visitors who complete a goal, such as submitting an RFQ.

In Plain Terms

Conversion rate optimization is the ongoing work of figuring out why visitors leave a website without taking action, and fixing it. "Conversion" just means completing whatever the page's goal is — submitting an RFQ, downloading a spec sheet, calling the number on the page.

In practice, CRO usually means looking at where visitors drop off (a form that's too long, a page with no clear next step, a headline that doesn't match what the visitor searched for) and testing changes against real traffic to see if they actually move the number, rather than guessing.

It's a different discipline from getting traffic in the first place. A site can rank well and get plenty of visits, and still convert almost none of them into RFQs if the page itself doesn't guide a visitor toward taking the next step.

Example

An industrial water treatment equipment supplier had steady traffic to its product pages but very few RFQs. The pages described the equipment in detail but buried the "Request a Quote" link at the bottom, below several paragraphs of specs. Moving the request-a-quote button above the fold, next to the product photo, increased quote requests from the same traffic without changing a single word of the product description.

Why It Matters for Manufacturers

Traffic is expensive to earn, whether it comes from SEO, PPC, or a trade show follow-up email that drives someone to the site. A low conversion rate means a lot of that earned traffic is being wasted on a page that doesn't ask for the business clearly enough — often a cheaper fix than getting more traffic in the first place.

How MFG Web Design Handles CRO

Every site we build is checked against the same ten factors that determine whether a visitor actually submits an RFQ — clear CTAs, fast load times, a form that isn't asking for too much up front. Run your current site through the free RFQ Scorecard for a specific, scored breakdown of where it's losing visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a good RFQ conversion rate for a manufacturing website?

Industrial B2B sites typically convert well under 1% of visitors into an RFQ, with well-built sites reaching 1-3%. It varies a lot by industry and how much of the traffic is already looking to buy versus just researching.

Does CRO mean redesigning the whole website?

Not usually. Most CRO work is smaller and more targeted — rewriting a headline, moving a call to action higher on the page, simplifying a form — tested against what visitors actually do, rather than a full rebuild.
