What Is Schema Markup?
Schema Markup: Schema markup is code added to a web page that labels its content in a format search engines and AI models can parse directly, such as marking a paragraph as a business's phone number or a page's main question.

Every web page has two audiences: the person reading it, and the search engines and AI crawlers trying to figure out what it's about. Schema markup is written for the second audience. It's a small block of code, invisible on the page itself, that labels specific pieces of content in a standardized vocabulary — "this paragraph is a phone number," "this list of questions is an FAQ," "this business is a professional service located in Sterling Heights, Michigan."
Without it, a search engine or AI model has to guess at meaning from raw text, the same way a person skimming a page for the first time would. Schema markup removes the guessing. It's the difference between a crawler inferring that a page is probably about CNC machining, and a crawler reading a label that says explicitly: this is a Service page, the provider is this specific company, and here's their service area.
The most common format is JSON-LD, a small script block added to a page's <head>. It doesn't change how the page looks or reads to a visitor — it only changes what a machine can understand about it.

A metal fabrication shop publishes an FAQ answering "What tolerances can you hold on sheet metal?" Without schema markup, that answer is just a paragraph of text among many on the page. With FAQPage schema wrapped around it, Google and AI tools can identify that exact question-and-answer pair and pull it directly into a search result or a chat response — often without the visitor ever clicking through to the site first.

An engineer searching for a supplier rarely reads ten different websites end to end. They skim search results, AI summaries, and comparison answers, then click through to the two or three suppliers that look most credible and most specific to what they need.
